I’ve been a fan of Adam Carolla for over 15 years, from Loveline, The Man Show, Crank Yankers, and currently his popular podcasts, books and movies! In October 2015, Adam teased in his main show, The Adam Carolla Show podcast, about a guest he had previously recorded with Dr. Drew Pinsky (from Loveline and HLN, etc) on his Adam & Drew podcast. He said how much the discussion changed him and that he really felt like everyone should hear what this guy had to say. Well, Adam being as influential to me for so many years, I immediately downloaded the podcast and listened. About 10 minutes into it, I forwarded it to my boyfriend.
NSNG and VINNIE TORTORICH
Adam and Drew’s guest was Vinnie Tortorich, author of Fitness Confidential and host of The Angriest Trainer podcast, and he discussed NSNG lifestyle. NSNG stands for No Sugar, No Grains and has helped so many people turn around their health and fitness goals, improving quality of life, reducing hunger, and many more positive impacts. People have attributed their NSNG lifestyle to eliminating type 2 diabetes, chronic pain, migraines, even infertility issues.
We simply eliminate sugars and grains from our diet, only allowing sugars that are naturally occurring in fruits and vegetables or dairy. We do not consume any wheat, rice, or corn, just occasional tortilla chips at Mexican restaurants.
So, you’re probably asking “Well, what DO you eat?”…. We get to eat alot of yummy fats. Yeah, I said FATS! Turns out, eating fat doesn’t make you fat. If it did, I would’ve gained 30 lbs instead of losing 30 lbs since I started NSNG. So, bring on the BACON! Don’t trim off that skin and fat from your chicken! If you can tolerate dairy, pile on the sour cream or FULL FAT yogurt! Saturated fats have been demonized in the media as the bad fats to avoid, this is the furthest from the truth. Get the good grass-fed butter like Kerry Gold or unrefined coconut oil for cooking all your eggs and fresh veggies! My favorite meal is grilling grass-fed beef or bison ribeye steak.
Another important part of NSNG is omega-3’s. I thought I was pretty well on track with NSNG, but with my job I was dining out at restaurants for lunch having salads with their dressings. Salad dressings mostly contain canola oil and sugar. After a phone consult with Vinnie Tortorich (talk to Vinnie here!), I started carrying my own olive oil and vinegar to restaurants. I also began taking a fish oil supplement and we eat plenty of salmon grilled with garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper, and drizzled with olive oil.
The best explanation I have for why NSNG works is that by not consuming sugar and grains (that turn to sugar in your liver) my body burns fat for energy. If you are consuming sugar and grains, your body is burning the sugar for energy first, before it will ever touch your fat stores.
BLOGGING ON SUGAR GRAIN FREE BABY
At 35, happy with my partner, healthy after a 30 lb weight loss transitioning to NSNG, I’ve never felt more ready to tackle pregnancy and motherhood. We’ve been having all the big talks and started reading the books, but nothing out there will prepare me for a pregnancy while maintaining my NSNG lifestyle. It’s hard enough to discuss NSNG with physicians even without a pregnancy. That’s why I chose to create my sugar grain free baby blog. I want to document the path, in hopes that my successes and failures can help someone else looking for the information I’ve been seeking. And bonus if it can lead someone to NSNG! Please tell me about your experiences or ask questions!
CAROLLA’S EFFECT
NSNG has been absolutely life-changing for me and my partner. I’ve never been a dieter or big into working out, but I have been curvy with extra pounds my whole life. I don’t ever remember, even in high school or junior high, wearing sizes smaller than a 10 and I’ve been up to 14 and 16 in recent years. I’m currently wearing size 6! Adam Carolla is indirectly responsible for probably 1000’s of lbs of weight loss and Vinnie has to be responsible for 100’s of 1000’s of lbs. How grateful I am to Adam for introducing this amazing lifestyle and Vinnie to me and so many more of his fans!
