If you’re not doing this yet, you probably will be soon!

As a health-conscious, soon-to-be mommy, I’ve begun creating a clean, natural atmosphere in my home. Tossing out products full of toxins and processed chemicals, I looked toward my best friend and Young Living Essential Oils independent distributor for clean, natural replacements.

The first step I made was getting rid of my wall plug-ins with scented cartridges for freshening the smell in my house. Instead, I purchased a diffuser on Amazon and tried out two essential oils mixed for the best, most relaxing room scent-bergamot and lavender. This is more maintenance than just plugging in the wall and forgetting about it, but it is more of an ‘on-demand’ type scent. You want scent, fill the diffuser and turn it on! The plug-in scents always disappeared after a few hours anyway, so if you wanted full time scent you’d have to invest in hundreds of the replacement cartridges! Depending on what diffuser you prefer, the scent will last hours, as long as the water reservoir lasts. My diffuser has an auto-shut off feature and several unique settings including illumination with many different colors and intermittent misting.

Young Living Essential Oil - Thieves

My second introduction with Young Living Essential Oils included the oh-so-popular THIEVES blend. According to Young Living’s website: Thieves® essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma.
I am diffusing it and using it in a roller ball bottle mixed with Villa Cappelli olive oil to smooth into skin. You could also use liquid coconut oil to mix with essential oils in your roller ball bottle. The cinnamon smells amazing in my home and creates such a wonderful, peaceful environment. The THIEVES blend has been incorporated into many different products. During a recent visit with my midwife, I noticed she had the THIEVES hand wash in the bathroom. Young Living also has THIEVES toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, lozenges, cleaners and laundry detergent.

Young Living Essential Oil - Ningxia RedMy best friend and Young Living independent distributor also gifted me with a bottle of Ningxia Red. According to Young Living’s 2016 Product Guide: Ningxia Red is a healthy daily supplement beverage that contains whole Ningxia wolfberry puree; a superfruit blend of blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices; natural stevia extract; grape seed extract; pure vanilla extract; and Orange, Yuzu, Lemon, and Tangerine essential oils. The recommended usage is 2 fl. oz. twice a day, but it tastes very sweet to me since I do not consume a lot of sugar. I only take a small amount several times a week. According to Young Living’s website: Young Living NingXia Red benefits include support for energy levels, normal cellular function, and whole-body and normal eye health.

I’m enjoying experimenting with the essential oils and will be introducing even more to my household! If you would like to get started on creating a non-toxic environment in your household, here are some of my other tips:

  • Deodorant: this is a good place to start!  You use deodorant every day.  There’s evidence of developing cancer and increased illness from using deodorants (and other products) containing aluminum.   I’m currently trying out different natural deodorant brands including Tom’s of Maine and Meow Meow Tweet (baking soda free).  Be aware, as you switch to a natural deodorant, you may experience a rash or irritation as your body adjusts to the change (a detox!), just as you may experience withdrawals from eliminating sugar and grains!  If you’d like to learn more, watch this new documentary available on Amazon Prime Video:

  • Makeup: If you are wearing layers of cosmetics every day, there’s many toxins soaking into your skin.  I’ve trashed a lot of my expensive makeup and reduced my daily use.  I’m currently trying out several organic and natural cosmetic options.  There’s a great mascara I’m currently trying by 100% Pure.  It is all natural and vegan, using real Black Tea Extract, Vitamin E, Beeswax, Berries, Oat Protein, Cocoa See Butter.  I’ve also switched to a product I had received as a sample from my Birchbox subscription: Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream.  The active ingredient is zinc oxide 20% (which is still undesirable, but the best I’ve found so far…) and includes Juice Beauty proprietary blend of fruit stem cells.  Please share if you’ve found other cosmetic natural alternatives!

  • Cookware: We enjoy using cast iron for our daily cooking and have built up quite a collection!  Once we had several skillets, we threw out all of our other ones and began primarily using the cast iron daily for cooking eggs, bacon and veggies.  My partner then surprised me for Christmas one year with a cast iron dutch oven I’d wanted!  We were then able to throw out a lot of our old pots and use this one exclusively for larger dishes such as soups and  blended meat/veggie recipes.  My hubby also gifted me a cast iron wok which I use for certain other meals that may be too large for a skillet but doesn’t require the large dutch oven.
