All Oils are NOT created Equal!

When starting NSNG, you may ask yourself (or may get asked) “What is all this fat doing to my heart?”, which is VERY COMMON considering we’ve been told for decades to eat less cholesterol containing foods and heart healthy grains… Most people are hesitant to eat ALL the bacon and ALL the fat that most NSNGers enjoy. We limit oils to olive, avocado, or coconut oils due to the higher GOOD fat content. But as the title says: All Oils are NOT created Equal!  You may have heard that the majority of olive oils in our US grocery stores are not pure at all.  See this study by UC-Davis that tested many olive oils in California for their purity.  It has been found that most consumer olive oils sold in the US are actually other *cheaper* and unhealthier forms of oils.

Villa Cappelli Olive Oil

After becoming a fan of Vinnie’s podcast and hearing his promotion of Villa Cappelli olive oil, we finally tried it out (also after waiting for it to be in stock!).  We ordered a 3L tin and it arrived within a week straight from Italy!  We poured a shot and tasted it – the Puglia Pinch™!  Villa Cappelli has a kick like no other olive oil I’ve tasted!  We now order 3L tins 2-3 at a time when it’s in stock because it will go out of stock often and they do not rush their olives just for the demand..  These oils are pure and made from real food that is healthy for you!  Canola, vegetable, corn oils are all processed garbage!

But, you’re still concerned about your heart health and cholesterol….

I MUST recommend an amazing book by Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman: Cholesterol Clarity.  This book is SO eye-opening to cholesterol and how important it actually is for your body!  If you cut out all cholesterol containing foods, your body would actually produce more – your body produces cholesterol!  How bad is it, if your own body is normally producing it?  Well, it’s shifting your mind to no longer fear cholesterol containing foods and instead avoid foods that are creating inflammation in your body.  Inflammation – NOT CHOLESTEROL – is your highest indicator of cardiovascular disease!  Consuming sugar and grains creates inflammation in your body.  Another huge discovery about cholesterol: total cholesterol number is not an accurate indicator of your current health, though most doctors tend to only focus on that one number.  Even a basic lipid profile doesn’t accurately give the results you need to know your health status.  Ask for an ADVANCED LIPID PROFILE (also known as NMR lipoprofile test) with an INFLAMMATION PANEL (also known as C-Reactive Protein Marker).  The advanced lipid profile test will break down the lipoprotein numbers and you will understand a bigger picture of your HDL, LDL, VLDL levels.  Please read more from Dr. Thomas Dayspring on Jimmy Moore’s Livin La Vida Low Carb Blog.

To reduce your inflammation and LDL levels, decrease inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids (vegetable oils, sunflower oils, corn oils) and increase anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids (wild-caught fish, fish oils, olive oils, grass-fed meat, pasture-raised chickens/eggs).  I recommend Carlson fish oil supplement if you need more than what you are getting from food.

I use coconut oil every morning in our small, shallow cast iron pan to cook eggs for breakfast.  Coconut oil is a form of medium chain triglycerides (medium chain fatty acids) that, simply said, provide energy.  There are several forms of coconut oil – cold pressed, unrefined, refined, virgin, etc!  We opt for Dr. Bronner’s Fresh Pressed Unrefined Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.  More info from organicfacts.net:

Taste: Unrefined coconut oil is tastier than the refined coconut oil as it is neither bleached nor refined, so it retains its natural taste.

Flavor: Again, unrefined coconut oil has a beautiful flavor of fresh coconuts, which is absent in refined coconut oil, since it is deodorized and processed.

Nutrients: It is more nutritious than the refined variety, being unprocessed and subjected to no detrimental heat. It is richer in proteins (this is almost totally absent in refined oil), vitamins, and antioxidants.

MCT Oil is a more broken down version of the medium chain fatty acid – extracted from coconut oil.  This is more of a clear, flowy liquid than the creamier, opaque coconut oil.  Read more about the benefits of consuming MCT oil here at the Wellness Mama blog!  We have a bottle of MCT oil but only use it rarely – be careful with consuming the oil as it can cause a loose bowel…  I prefer the creamier, coconut taste of coconut oil.

Let me know if you try Villa Cappelli and what you think!!
